Bailey Sharp

Where do we know you from?
I really want to paraphrase that Mitch Hedberg joke about more people seeing him at the store than on David Letterman’s late night show, so this is my attempt to do this: You probably know me from the store. Other than that I make comics and animation, and I’m the Co-Art Editor at the Melbourne magazine The Lifted Brow with my partner Ben Juers.

What do you do with yourself?
I try to regularly put out zine-like comics and am working on an animated short film. For money I teach and do some freelance jobs on the side but mostly I’m just interested in building up my art practice, I like any form of visual storytelling.

Perks of the job?
I really enjoy commissioning work - it’s so nice to be able to establish a connection with an artist you admire. Also to be able to offer some paid work. Most of the stuff we publish is from independent comics artists who don’t use their art skills to work commercially and so don’t have a lot of avenues to earn money from their art. I’d like a job where I just portion out money to cool artists I like all day long.

Halloween in Australia?
I’m not a big Halloween person but I always feel a twinge of homesickness for the states around that time. I come from a fairly theatrical family and when I was younger my mother would dress up as a kind of dummy out the front of our house (wearing oversized clothes stuffed full of straw) with the candy bowl on her lap. Kids would come up to take a piece and she’d suddenly move and they’d get scared, etc. This story always horrifies Australian’s when I tell it, it sounds so extreme but that’s just because Halloween doesn’t run as deep here. Really it’s quite sweet.

What did you do last weekend?
I went to the first Zine There, Done That fair in Thirroul - I’d been spending my week compiling a new comic to sell there.

What’s your perfect Sunday?
Mmm wake up late, have a huge breakfast, go for walk in a park, sit down and draw. Spend time with someone cute. Drink a little. Watch a really good movie and go right to sleep.

Where do we know you from?
The coffee cue at Greens, or maybe from curing your hangover at any one of the seven music festivals I worked at over the last summer in the Taco Truck.

What do you do with yourself?
Try to wear all of the same colour, and study textile design.

Who's been the most cooked person to order a taco?
Not sure... But the people of Strawberry Fields however definitely have unique way of rolling up their notes.

What's the worst thing you've ever forgotten to remember but also remebered you forgot?
Ah I once took air freshener on a school camp instead of deodorant..?

What's the best key?
E - ACDC have made millions off of it...

Pick one Australian musician to get ice-cream with - If their scoops fell out of their cone, would you give them yours?
Courtney Barnett and yes... yes to anyone on Milk Records.

What’s your perfect Sunday?
Listening to Dad's record collection and drinking espresso martinis.
