Hark! Today marks the premiere of Sunbather's debut single ‘Softly Spoken’, a moment of mesmerising dream-pop that brims with delicious textures and delightful tones.
The manifestation of late-night revelations, dream/indie pop band Sunbather are making a name for themselves with their ethereal, guitar driven sound and compelling melodies. The duo, Sally Latter and Mike Todman, discovered their shared musical tastes while dancing to a slow shoegaze playlist in their Brisbane sharehouse after a party and decided to start a project. As I’m sure is the case for many other musicians, I’ve started countless bands under these circumstances that don’t even make it to a first rehearsal. However, what Sunbather has created since this event is truly impressive.

From the outset, ‘Softly Spoken’ sends the listener into dream-pop heaven. Built with layers of warm guitar, bright percussion and Sally's mesmerising vocals, the track’s unhurried atmosphere was inspired by 'Twilight Conversation', a painting by Ron Hicks. Sally explains “the painting reminds me of the winding conversation that happens between friends, and the value in paying attention. The lyrics to the song explore the small details that make up a life shared, and are a reflection on the need to be gentle with one another.” As the glimmering textures amount, we’re struck by a sense of intimacy and reflection, which is elevated further by the track's rich harmonies - if I’m dreaming, don’t wake me up!

A stunning debut, ‘Softly Spoken’ is the first release of a forthcoming five-track EP, featuring Stu Mckenzie (Future Haunts, Good Boy) on drums and produced by Aidan Hogg at Plutonium studios. With a track of this calibre, we're looking forward to seeing what their next release brings.

Lose yourself to the sound of 'Softly Spoken' above, and keep an eye on Sunbather via their socials as they gear up to release their debut EP later this year.
