Introduction - Red Light
Words by James Lynch
Friday 5th June, 2020
Today we have the pleasure of introducing Adelaide post-punk trio Introduction, and share their debut single ‘Red Light’, an enthralling dream-pop slowburner that comes paired with an otherworldly new clip.
Despite its minimal instrumentation, ‘Red Light’ instantly feels expansive as it slowly opens, powered by a murky bassline that ambles alongside the steady clang of a tambourine. After a moment, waves of metamorphic synthesisers emerge to bend and swirl enigmatically, bridging the gap between the stark rhythm section and Harriet Fraser-Barbour’s airy vocals, which seemingly float high above the instrumentation. Delicate but direct, Harriet’s words are somewhat lost amongst a foggy delay, yet the impact is still felt, especially so as the band picks up a teetering groove while new vocal melodies enter the fold, to slowly twist and blur together as ‘Red Light’ progresses. Speaking about the track, Harriet shares “I guess it’s about the ways in which anxiety can fill your body, the ways in which it can distort time, the ways it can literally freeze you” - a sense that can be felt as the track fades, not too far from where it originally began but now encompassing an overwhelming weight accumulated over the emotively exhausting five minutes just passed.

The new clip, created by Capital Waste Pictures, reimagines the dreamy feel of the track with an otherworldly and slightly surreal visual take. With its slow, sweeping footage and desolate backdrop, the clip might feel dystopian, but instead appears more whimsical and playful than the track might suggest. Harriet explains “the video was loosely created around an abstract fantasy narrative, constructed of images we found empowering but also a bit silly, a bit fun. We are a new-age auto-mechanica (car) worshipping witch coven - cars and motorbikes being an arena usually dominated by men but also cars being a powerful medium to finding freedom, agency, independence. Driving really fills me with a sense of being able to achieve anything, it’s the opposite of static. (Speaking as someone who has lost their license not once but three times - I love a hoon). Cars themselves also provide an invaluable place of refuge, comfort and safety. It’s a weird kind of private bubble in a public place. I really like that.”
