Majak Door - Everybody Wants You
Words by Conor Lochrie
Monday 8th June, 2020
Today, local indie-rock/surf crew Majak Door bring us 'Everybody Wants You', a subtle but welcome expansion on their slacker rock sound.
Majak Door make music for the brighter moments - their upbeat psychedelia is best suited for happier times, but that doesn’t mean new music from them isn’t welcome now. Their relentlessly sunny sound had seen the band attract attention in Melbourne and beyond for a while now, and the past couple of years has had the group become a staple in the local scene. For a band who’ve been consistently dropping new music since 2017, slowing down in 2020 might not have been their original plan - but they’re back after a natural break with ‘Everybody Wants You’, pointing towards exciting things to come.

Written by frontman Frankie Vakalis and recorded at Alamo Studios with Daniel Caswel, ’Everybody Wants You’ is an incremental tweaking of the Majak Door sound. Where earlier singles ‘Daisies’ or ‘Shotgun’ traded in slacker summer vibes - a result of the heavy influence Mac DeMarco possessed over the band - ‘Everybody Wants You’ looks back further to the golden age of surf rock in the 1960’s, powered by twanging guitars that swirl and gleam around Frankie’s breathy psychedelic vocals. In the modern sense, the development brings to mind loved garage-psych revivalists The Growlers, not an unjust comparison given the band themselves have cited the Americans as being impactful on their music.

Cloaked in a haze of jangling riffs, it’s almost impossible not to be swept away by ‘Everybody Wants You’. It favours rhythm over songwriting, not necessarily a bad thing in this instance - surf rock was always about light reverb and good times. The song will allow any listener a precious few minutes of chilled escapism, a welcome dose of dreamy energy. It’s an excellent return that makes the following call a safe bet - Majak Door, everybody should want you.
