Video Premiere:
On Bed with Chloe Alison Escott
Words by James Lynch
Thursday 22nd October, 2020
Following the release of Stars Under Contract last week, the good people at Chapter Music have kindly shared with us a new short film/bedside interview with Chloe Alison Escott, offering a momentary glimpse into the illuminative and hilarious mind of the magnetic Tasmanian songwriter.
On her debut solo album, Chloe Alison Escott traded in the grimy chug and snarky commentary of her post-punk outfit The Native Cats, in favour of a collection of stark and contemplative piano pieces, each song unravelling alongside Chloe’s inspired and visceral lyrics. It’s fitting then, that in lieu of another video clip, the new short film puts Chloe’s acute perception of the world and thrilling wit on display just as much.

Like Stars Under Contract, there’s something simultaneously inviting and disconcerting as we watch on - although we’re hanging off every word shared between Chloe and interviewer Lucinda Shannon, there’s also a sense that we’re eavesdropping on an unreserved conversation between close friends, that’s as fun as it is profoundly intimate. That said, considering how similarly exposed Stars Under Contract is, the film serves as a welcome invitation to dig even deeper into the arresting world Chloe has created on her debut album.

Speaking about the film, Chloe shares “it was September and I’d just cancelled a planned video for ‘Half Moon’ due to severe two thousand and twenty exhaustion. I tried to think of alternatives and this was the only idea that made sense. Just me and two of my best friends: Izzy Almaz behind the camera, and Lucinda Shannon with me on the bed, talking about songwriting and life in our mid-30s, and asking each other some truly horrific questions from a pack of Bride-To-Be’s Dirty Secrets cards. It’s deep and it’s ridiculous and I hope you enjoy it.”

Stars Under Contract is out now through Chapter Music - head here to stream or purchase the album.
