Premiere:
OUZO! - Balloons
Words by James Donovan
Friday 22nd October, 2021

Melbourne's OUZO! return with a chaotic and intellectual stride on new 7" State of Affairs / Balloons, from Weather Vane Records. Today we have the absolute pleasure of premiering the B-side. Sink your teeth in, why not?
On first glance, there's something amorphous in the citric rush of OUZO!'s punk confectionery, but something to be heavily absorbed as well. Like a sharp punch to the guts with a childish taunt to follow. It feels brutish, but refreshingly coy. In sparing no expense, the band have a brand new 7" on the way via the impeccable Weather Vane Records (also on overseas labels, Polaks Records and French Wine Records) and we're chuffed to be able to premiere the B-side today.

Recorded through the grey haze of a world in and out of lockdown, 'State of Affairs' and its infectious B-side 'Balloons' are OUZO! at their most volatile and sprawling best; the melting pot of a band with all gears functioning. Like a fine tuned mechanism, both sides of this hot new single are symbiotic to each other. Nathan Korver, guitarist with the band explains, “We always wanted to do these two songs in particular as a 7” … we’d always play them back to back and they were written at the same time. They're inseparable”. Recorded DIY and mastered by the master, Mikey Young, themes of frustration and nihilism are carefully thrown into the mix with a brash attitude you've come to expect of the Melbourne four-piece. In addition to the fresh 7", the band has brought in a new member, Veeka Nazarova of Kosmetika. “So lucky to have Veeka in the band now as well,” Korver excitedly exclaims. “[She's] added a new dynamic for sure!”

Lightning doesn't tend to strike twice, but in following up last year's self released EP, Dried Tomato (and a soon to come LP), it's a safe bet that OUZO! are going to be a band to keep a beady little eye on. Consider me sold.

State of Affairs / Balloons is out on December 3rd through Weather Vane Records - head to weathervanerecords.bandcamp.com to pre-order the limited 7" record.
