Following the release of his latest EP Empty Phonecalls Vacant Smiles last year, local songwriter Lady Fern has shared an imaginative new clip for ‘Don’t Look At Me Like That’, adding an immersive extra layer to the track’s alluring indie-folk atmosphere.
With a string of releases to his name since emerging in mid 2020, Lady Fern (aka singer-songwriter Ewen Stewart) clearly knows how to keep himself busy. Last September, he followed up his debut album with a brand new EP entitled Empty Phonecalls Vacant Smiles, five tracks that explored his brand of contemplative indie-rock and enthralling storytelling.

A highlight from his latest EP, ‘Don’t Look At Me Like That’ expands around a tangle of soft guitar jangles, a simmering groove and Ewen’s evocative vocal performance. It’s a difficult track to place; sounding both grandiose and understated, that maintains a wistfulness that unravels alongside a spirited gleam in the eye, ‘Don’t Look At Me Like That’ skilfully manages to capture multiple sides of Lady Fern’s personality in the one track.

Fittingly then, the new clip does exactly this, comparing the humdrum of Ewen’s work life with a version of himself from where he’d rather be - playing guitar, reading a book and hanging out at the park. It’s imaginative and playful, while cleverly shining a light on the characteristics of the track that might’ve been lost on record, making the entire song feel all the more radiant and dynamic.

Speaking about the track, Ewen shares, “‘Don’t Look at Me Like That’ is a light hearted track that draws humour from an altercation with a colleague (I won’t go into details). It’s a song about dreaming of better days, while comprehending one’s grim reality.”

Lady Fern's latest EP Empty Phonecalls Vacant Smiles is out now.
