Bailey Judd - Brand New Car
(Live at Colour Club)
Words by James Lynch
Friday 28th January, 2022
Off the back of the release of his latest single last week, indie-pop shapeshifter Bailey Judd has shared a new clip for ‘Brand New Clip’ - captured live at Colour Club in Carlton, we’re treated to an immersive rendition of his explosive 80’s pop inspired belter.
A slight gear shift from his previous single ‘Come Running To Me’, which explored soft synth-pop textures and illusive grooves, ‘Brand New Car’ is instantly more raucous. After materialising with some synthesiser swells alongside a haphazard guitar lead, the track emerges with a strutting backbeat and Bailey’s assured vocals front and centre. Although its lyrics revolve around money worries, the instrumentation seems to ignore this fact and comes loaded with an unstoppable swagger that radiates through the entire track; both when the mood drops for Bailey to sing wholeheartedly through the swirl of layers, or when he and his band are ripping through the soaring riff that shoots the track into the stratosphere.

Performed at Carlton’s Colour Club, the live clip cleverly anchors the enigmatic tune within a more tangible and immediate atmosphere. Showcasing Bailey and his band tearing through the track, we’re not only shown how incredibly tight this band is, but with a charming gleam in his eye, we can see how much fun Bailey’s really having despite the track’s troublesome themes.

Speaking about the track, Bailey has shared “the song was written during lockdown about the frustration of being a freelance musician making just enough money to make rent while watching your friends buy new cars and live an unattainable life. It is also about the societal voice telling you that your youth is running out, prescribing conformity in order to be loved and taken seriously in the capitalist world. The lockdown caused me to reflect on my parent's paradoxical attitude towards money - striving to be rich but being irresponsible with the money they had.”

'Brand New Car' is out now in all the usual places. To celebrate the release, Bailey Judd will be performing every Wednesday night at The Retreat Hotel in Brunswick - join the event here.
