Xani - Dreaming of You
Words by James Lynch
Tuesday 14th June, 2022
Back with her first new music for the year, today we have the pleasure of sharing ‘Dreaming of You’ from innovative local songwriter Xani, an enthralling violin-led pop tune that doubles as the first taste of her forthcoming concept album An Inaccurate History of Electronic Music.
For the better part of the last five years, Melbourne-based songwriter, producer and violin player Xani Kolac has been crafting imaginative and experimental alternative-pop music under her Xani moniker, forever flirting between genres thanks to her shapeshifting violin playing yet never quite settling into a specific pigeon-hole. While her previous single ‘You Make Me Complete’ saw her free-flowing strings and expressive vocals anchored by an evocative indie-rock backbone, the next taste of her Xani project sees her firmly back in the glitzy pop zone while hinting where she’s headed next as she begins to tease An Inaccurate History of Electronic Music.

Instantly immersive, ‘Dreaming of You’ opens into a flurry of cinematic strings over a simmering rhythm section, before shifting into rich soul-infused R&B groove rounded out by a stack of Xani’s honeyed vocals. With her radiant voice front and centre, the track leaves plenty of space for the colourful instrumentation to swirl around alluringly - leisurely guitars stab alongside swarms of percussion, and strings continue to sweep in and out before fully engulfing the soundscape to tangle evocatively with each of Xani’s floating vocal hooks. For a song that “tells the story of a young woman so infatuated with the idea of love that she would happily dream her life away”, the track is fittingly languorous; its warm layers washing over us for its full four-minute runtime until we’re left basking in an enchanting and glamorous haze.

'Dreaming of You' is out everywhere tomorrow. Check out Xani's tour dates below.
