Speed Dating
Friday 24th November, 2017
It's been a mighty warm Melbourne Music Week, but we've decided to keep the heat coming. For speed dating this week we chatted with Melbourne punks Press Club and singer-singwriter Angie McMahon, both involved in this year's Face The Music conference. Meanwhile, Torquay's Bec Goring has been killing it of late, performing with the likes of Alexander Biggs and Hollie Joyce, and you can catch her solo this weekend at Queenscliff Music Festival.

Press Club

Where do we know you from?
I am Iain Macrae from Melbourne band, Press Club. You probably don't know me yet. What do you do with yourself?
I am a full time musician/songwriter/bartender part-time entrepreneur/taste-maker/fitness model/influencer.

If you could have anyone as a dad, who would it be?
Pretty happy with mine tbph. But if I had to chose a man to also be my dad I think I would pick Jimmy Barnes. I think he and my father would get along cos they both Scottish. Their relationship would blossom into a kaleidoscope of joy and I might cop a few lullabies from 'the voice of our nation'.

What’s something you’re bad at?
Karate. Never been able to do up a belt anyway so who cares what colour it is?

Which band would you most like to be in a cover band of?
Cold Chisel.

What’s your perfect Sunday?
Breakfast at Sweethearts followed by pulling a job on a small town TAB, then lunch at one of two hotels.

Angie McMahon

Where do we know you from?
The girl you might see in Melbourne band rooms with bad posture and googly eyes for beautiful songwriters. Also I just released my single Slow Mover, which is on a German Spotify playlist called 'Zuhause' so maybe you know me if you listen to Zuhause a lot.

What do you do with yourself?
For the last little while I've been making an album, playing gigs, making a mess in my bedroom, watching Nashville, writing songs, booking bands for work and travelling around a bit.

What’s something you said you didn’t do but you totally did?
Ohh not sure...probably told someone I didn't see their message, because my phone makes me anxious hah.

Can you rap any verses in full? Prove it.
Hahahah yes ok, here's some Black Eyed Peas/high brow literature: what's wrong with the world mama people livin like they ain't got no morals i think the whole world's addicted to the drama overiuhiuhkdddsdfjh things that will bring the trauma, overseas yeah we tryna stop terrorism but we still got terrorists here livin, in the USA the big CIA the blshfisdh udhghsomething KKK, but if you only have love for your own race then you only leave space to discriminate and to discriminate only generates hate and when you hate then you're bound to get irate yeh man this is what u demonstrate and that's exactly how anger works and operates, but you gotta have love to set it straight, take control of your mind and meditate, let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all. "PEOPLE KILLIN PEOPLE DYIN..."

I used to know the whole song. Probably should pick something cooler next time someone asks me this.

Do you like your name?
Yeah. I mean I didn't like when people would sing the Angela Anaconda theme song at me in Primary School but I was probably oversensitive...

What's your perfect Sunday?
Sitting outside, eating food and making myself concentrate on a book for more than 15 seconds.

Bec Goring

Where do we know you from?
Gee-long/Torquay

What do you do with yourself?
Play gigs, play footy, work sometimes.

Go-To Karoake song?
Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker

Arms for legs or legs for arms?
Legs for arms - that’ll get me drafted to AFLW… maybe…

The other day I was driving in peak hour and it was the worst. Where do you stand on road-rage?
The emergency lane was flowing pretty nicely, give that lane a go. The alternative is to pop Claire Bowditch on 774 ABC Radio, she’s a wonderful calming influence.

What's your perfect Sunday?
An abundance of peppermint tea, the old stratocaster plugged into the loop pedal with the amp cranked to eleven OR talking smack and kicking leather around a footy oval, followed by a few froths.
