Video Premiere:
The Midwayers - Soar
Words and interview by James Lynch
Monday 4th June, 2018
With their first album out in just a few weeks and a 17-show national tour about to kick off, we’re really excited to premiere the debut single ‘Soar’ and accompanying video-clip from Mornington Peninsula alt-rock crew The Midwayers.
For a band that describes their sound as “melding organic acoustics and electronics”, The Midwayers stay true to their word on their debut single. ‘Soar’ opens with the rustic scuffs of an acoustic guitar and some sandy vocals, before the track bursts open with an upbeat rhythm section and danceable groove. Filled out with a spacey guitar lead and some craftily layered vocals, it’s a sudden turn from the track’s folky opening and highlights the band’s genre-bending ways. ‘Soar’ takes us for ride with some cruisey reggae vibes, with an ethereal soundscape of psychedelic guitars tucked in to keep us on our toes, before The Midwayers jam the tune to its conclusion.

The single comes accompanied by a video-clip that plays like a visual representation of The Midwayers’ sound. Depicting a bohemian-looking guy boogieing along to the track, there’s the unlikely juxtaposition of the natural landscape combined with his modern, expressive moves. The viewer is briefly thrown into disarray with some hazy layered visuals, before we end up at a Midwayers gig, a quick reminder of the glue tying these contradictory worlds together.

As the band gear up to drop their debut album Seasons Vol. 1 on June 15 and hit the road, we caught up for a chat to find out all the latest news.

TJ: Want to tell us a bit about who The Midwayers are?

TM: The Midwayers are made up of two brothers/two friends. After years of playing solo and in seperate bands, brothers Brendon and Tyson decided to bring their dynamic song writing together to create intimate soundscapes, melding organic acoustics and electronics, topped by shimmering, angelic vocal harmonies that reflect intelligence and philosophy. Originally playing as a four piece, Cal (drums) was unfortunately unable to commit to a nation wide tour. From here, the trio including Matt (bass/keys) developed into a three piece, looping dynamic force! For the past 18 months they have been writing and recording a bunch of tracks per season that has now come together to contribute to the final debut album Seasons Vol.1!

What’s the story behind the new single ‘Soar’ and the accompanying video?

‘Soar’ originated whilst Tyson was travelling through New Zealand, sending tracks back and forth between him and Brendon/Matt back in Australia. From here the track grew into a groovy surf rock vibe with some under tones of reggae that you'll hear today. ‘Soar’ is written about a friend who always took the ‘party’ too far, beyond comprehension of who they even were. The clip features their close friend Rossco, who had always connected strongly with the track in early production. Being a phenomenal dancer, The Midwayers asked him to be part of the clip. Tyson put this clip together with a sense of disconnection in hopes to support the essence of the track.

You’re about to embark on your first national tour - any idea what to expect?

Travelling with an old 4x4 Discovery and even older 1970's Cabana Caravan, they’ve gathered all their resources to make this tour happen. The last two months they have completely re-vamped the live set to get people dancing and connecting with the complex melodies and harmonics throughout the songs. They’re looking forward to meeting all the local support acts, creating stories and making new friends and fans along the way!

How’s the rest of 2018 shaping up for The Midwayers?

Once the tour is complete, The Midwayers are going to be pushing for festival slots and expanding the musical friendships they've already made along the way. Also releasing a bunch of b-side tracks that didn't quite make the final cut of the Seasons Vol.1 album. While working solidly on a new album aimed to be released in late 2019, expect plenty more shows coming for the rest of 2018.
