Dental Plan - Dental Plan
Dental Plan - Dental Plan
Announcing themselves with a bang, Dental Plan’s self-titled debut sports a brand of indie punk that’s sure to get heads banging, arms flying, and plenty of people excited.
Only three songs long, Dental Plan EP is just a taster, but those three songs showcase a winning formula. They’re so catchy that they can’t be forgotten. The Melbourne band’s opening single, ‘Weighed Down’, is a heavy piece of power pop that doesn’t really slow down after the opening thirty seconds. Through the full-on energy, a catchy-as-anything guitar riff stands out, earning its place above the fuzz.
‘Deep Low’ is a bit more grunge, bearing plenty of the hallmarks of Seattle Sound. Like the rest of the album, this fuels a bit of nostalgia, and, like the rest of the album, this track would be easy to dance to, moving up and down between intensities and driving forwards with a low guitar and bass line. Though the whole band contribute vocals at different points in the album, lead singer Niam’s low voice brings attitude to this one.
The last track, ‘Stare Into The Sun’, picks things up again, flying out of the gates with loud, confident hooks and layers. The boys’ harmonies are pitched against bassist Joanne’s higher voice, and the lyrics give a sense of unity that can only produce good things. Somebody drops something at the end, to remind us that this is real garage rock.
We had a chat with the band ahead of the EP’s release to hear more about their process, inspiration, and plans.

TJ: Hey Dental Plan, what’s the story behind the new EP?
DP: We went to record a demo with Max from Lost Talk and were really happy with how it came out so we decided to release it, it was a really fun time recording so we thought we may as well let people know how the band sounds.
It sounds like everything’s happening sooner than expected. Given your very first show as a band was in late May, how’d you manage to get the EP done so quickly?
We actually recorded most of the EP before our first show, we are just 3 friends really stoked to be playing music together so thought it would be fun to lay down some tracks and just got stuck in. It came very easily, we didn't really think about it much at all, the songs were recorded live and then we added vocals on top.
You’re very open about your influences. Are you all completely into the same kinds of music?
I think it's safe to say we all love indie guitar rock, punk rock and grew up on 90's alternative rock. We have heavier weirder songs we haven't recorded yet. Stu and I come from a punk rock background and I have not met someone with a better knowledge of good indie rock than Jo, I'm looking forward to seeing what we can create together. We all like good music, I think?
After this statement of intent, what does Dental Plan have coming up?
We will be playing more shows at the end of the year, a little tour and hopefully recording a full record in the new year. If anyone wants to play a show hit us up, if we can we will do it, it's a great excuse for a party.
