Double Polyester - Sunchild
Double Polyester - Sunchild
We’re stoked to premiere the brand new clip from Melbourne psych-rockers Double Polyester - ’Sunchild’ is a murky cut of western-tinged psychedelia, and the new clip amps up the track’s nostalgic sounds with throwback visuals and hazy production.
Despite only rolling onto the scene at the beginning of the year and with only a handful of shows under their belt, Double Polyester have been quick to get things happening. Last month they dropped their debut EP Dull Roar, a collection of grimy garage psych that comes thick with washed-out guitars and 60’s styled grooves, and today have dropped a brand new clip for EP highlight and opening track ‘Sunchild.’
Led by rolling drums and swampy bass, ‘Sunchild’ opens into a sinister surf-rock jam, full with reverb-drenched guitars that warble and splutter back and forth. After a moment, the track shifts and finds a steady groove, led by a blown-out spaghetti western lead, before the band offer an airy vocal melody while guitars lazily chime. The track coasts on with a natural ebb and flow, constantly sliding between laid-back and trippy, and fierily restless. Things strip back momentarily, and we’re offered a moment to breathe as bass and drums drive the song along, before Double Polyester gear up once more, this time at their most intense, and ride ‘Sunshield’ out, full with murky guitars, frantic drums and eerie double vocals.
To match the track is a brand new film clip that pairs perfectly with the 60s/70s sounds that Double Polyester conjure on ‘Sunchild’. Featuring the band performing in a classic styled cinema with retro footage running on top of them, the clip does well to enhance the nostalgic vibes that Double Polyester clearly champion. To celebrate the release of the new clip, we got talking with the band to find out all about it.

TJ: For the unacquainted, want to tell us a bit about Double Polyester?
DP: Sure! We formed in early 2018. Although some of us have been playing together for years in other projects. We share common ground with 60’s/70’s garage rock. Our name came to us wearing Double Polyester while on holiday, the fast food of fabrics in the scorching heat.
What's the story behind the track ‘Sunchild' and the new clip?
‘Sunchild' came about after a long jam from earlier in the year. Generally, that’s how most of our songs are formed. We wanted it upbeat, twangy and catchy. The idea for the clip was to have it seem like we were playing in an old theatre. The visuals were projected onto us and were made to compliment the changes and lyrics in the song. The clips are a mash-up of b-grade horror films and other trashy tv/movies.
’Sunchild' is a really classic sounding slice of psychedelia, what draws you to that kind of style?
It’s hard to pinpoint, we draw a lot of inspiration from different styles and influences. When we jam it tends to lead to an eerie twangy sound that we all vibe from. Broadly speaking a love of pop culture from that era definitely resonates with all of us.
You've just dropped your debut EP Dull Roar - how's it been received so far?
I think Dull Roar has been well received. We were eager to get some songs out there and start playing. We’re really happy with the way it tuned out and people seem to like it. It’s still early days for us and we’re excited to keep creating.
How's the rest of the year shaping up for Double Polyester?
Great! We have some exciting things in the pipeline. Aiming to release a 7 inch by the end of the year and play some shows both locally and interstate.
