Hannah Kate - Cry July
Hannah Kate - Cry July
We’re stoked to premiere the brand new film clip from local garage-rock crew Hannah Kate - ‘Cry July’ is an explosive burst of chaotic fuzz-pop, and the new video is just as energetically restless as the track.
It’s been almost exactly a year since Hannah Kate blessed us with new music, but she returned earlier this month with ‘Cry July’ and is back in a big way. Following on from the dreamy indie-rock of her debut EP Late Brunch and last September’s ‘Easy Breezy’ single, ‘Cry July’ finds Hannah and crew at their most volatile, dialling up the intensity and serving up a wild slice of addictive fuzz-pop.
Propulsive from the get-go, it’s all blown-out guitars, machine-gun drums and tunnel vision production. Even Hannah’s voice, which usually sits gleaming above the instrumentation, is doused in grit and squished in amongst the noise, spitting line after line that recalls the chaos of the previous night. Despite the lyrics, ‘Cry July’ never feels lethargic or unmotivating - if anything, a hangover has never sounded so good.
Out today is the brand new clip for ‘Cry July’, and it’s just as erratic and restless as the track. Shot by local filmmaker Alanna Raif at Hannah's house the night after a party, the clip masterfully echoes the song's sentiment. With the disastrous looking setting and a camera that can barely stay steady, it's a perfect fit - if anything, you almost feel drunk watching on.
Overall, it's a really exciting return from Hannah Kate which sees the band clearly coming into their own within the local garage-rock scene. With the debut album on the way and the 'Cry July' launch tomorrow at the Tote, we caught up with Hannah to find out what she's been up to and she called me a weird name.

TJ: Hey Hannah, it’s been about a year since we last caught up, what’s been going on?
HK: Hullo James Jameson Mcjamesville quite a lot has been going on actually! We took a big break from the gigs to knuckle down and record this album, and I’m glad to say that it is mostly done! Apart from that I’ve just been writing album #2 and hangin about in melbs town.
What's the story behind 'Cry July'?
We wrote it about six months ago at Uni when we were “practicing for a gig” but then I was like “I JUST WANNA WRITE A UHH PUNK SONG OR SOMETHING” but I don’t think I even used words, I just did the rock symbols with my hands and like thrashed my head about, haha, so we wrote it then, in about 20 min. I only came up with the name recently, in July (lol), when some of my mates were doing Dry July, and I shouted out my friend Shelby during a set saying like oh good job for doing it blah blah “good on ya mate” but what I didn’t know was that she had caved that night and was holding a pint as I said it, the people were pretty confused, anyway that’s why it’s called 'Cry July'!
The new clip looks sick - tell us about it.
So it’s sort of just a fun little clip about partying etc, we filmed it at my old house the night after we had a party so the place was in shambles. I wanted to have some actual footage of us playing out in the world as there isn’t really any! And there are some funny little clips in there, it doesn’t really have a story line I guess but hey LIFE DOESN’T ALWAYS HAVE A STORY LINE NOW DOES IT
'Cry July' is set to be the first single from your debut album, which is pretty exciting - how are the vibes amongst the Hannah Kate camp at the moment?
Yes it’s all very exciting and busy busy busy and a lil stressful at times. Mainly exciting/fun though. I’m just working with Mike, yes Mike, the infamous tram cop, tracking synth and adding some harmonies, then we should be all set to mix master and press that shit to vinyl! I’m pretty keen to play some fun shows over the summer though, I’ve been itching to get back into heavy gigging.
How’s the rest of the year looking for Hannah Kate?
Well James, let me tell you how it’s looking, it’s looking summery, fruity times in Melbourne ahead, summer gigs, I’m talking Gaso with the roof open, home made frosé with strawberries (no needles), blow up pools in Preston backyards... but if you mean specific to the band plans ahaha it looks very album orientated, the second single should be out in about a month and the album launch will be announced shortly after, I’m aiming for December sometime but who knows!
