Tina Growls - Microwave
Today we’ve got the pleasure of premiering the brand new single and video from local alternative rockers Tina Growls - ‘Microwave’ is a dose of eerie dream-pop with a clip that peculiarly manages to blur the line between mundane and unsettling.
Following on from the release of Love Slaves earlier this year, Tina Growls are back with a taste of where they’re taking their gloomy grunge-pop next. While the previous EP saw them leaning into the more volatile side of their dark sound, fuelled by fiery guitar work and propulsive grooves, ‘Microwave’ finds the band cooling things off slightly, taking a more mild approach to create an equally sinister atmosphere.
Led by a chiming guitar, the band instantly sink into a brooding shuffle, as vocalist Darcy Rock weaves an ominously sweet melody over the swelling chords. With her enigmatic voice managing to make things sound as placid as they are menacing, ‘Microwave’ entrances us with its captivating ebb and flow. That is, until the band hit full force and explode into a fiery guitar break, before the track shifts back and slinks away with its meandering groove and venomous undertones.
The new clip, created by Darcy and shot in her and brother/bassist Dylan Rock’s unit in Northcote, pairs the track’s uncanny sounds with visuals that almost seem to depict regular life - between shots of the band performing we see drummer Lewellyn Irving looking at his phone and Dylan heading to the store to buy a new lighter. However, with ‘Microwave’’s eerie atmosphere lingering over the top, the visuals slowly become more sprawling and agitated, until it wraps up with Darcy staring menacingly down the camera at us, from a bath full with black water.
