Premiere:
The Dorks - The Dorks II
Words by James Lynch
Friday 13th September, 2019
Today we’ve got the pleasure of premiering the completely unhinged new EP from local punks The Dorks - blisteringly wild from start to finish, The Dorks II sees the band coming into their own with a vengeance.
Having been floating around the local music scene since 2016, The Dorks are seasoned noise-makers by this point. Following on from their debut EP See Through in 2017, The Dorks II finds the band shaking their garage origins and moving closer towards hardcore-punk, as they tell us the new release takes “elements of bands like Poison Idea and Minutemen”, whilst adding their own “snarky social commentary.”

Buried in lo-fi filth and clocking in at just 13 minutes long despite being six tracks long, the EP is a completely sonic assault. However, beneath the muck, the band are just as unruly - each moment on the EP explodes with reckless urgency, and as each member wrestles to be heard, the chaos becomes as compelling as it is almost unfathomable. Once they kick off with a flurry of blown-out guitar and blastbeats on ‘Can’t Stand Ya’, The Dorks refuse to settle - ‘Indulge Me’ is a sprawl of propulsive power chords and frenzied vocals, ‘Out’ is an furious sprint of a song and EP closer ‘Sycophant’ is even more volatile, with its careening drive and searing guitar breaks. Unrelenting, turbulent and completely thrilling, it’s a wild ride but one very worth jumping onboard for.

Have a listen to The Dorks II above, and catch The Dorks tomorrow, September 14th, upstairs at The Tote, as they launch the new tape with another round of their own mini-festival Dorkmania.
