Grand Pine - Heart
Grand Pine - Heart
Ahead of their single launch this Thursday, local indie-folk crew Grand Pine have shared a new film clip and given us the pleasure of premiering it for them - matching the turbulent atmosphere of ‘Heart’, the clip adds an extra layer of poignancy into the already powerful track.
The last time we heard from Grand Pine was at the beginning of the year when they graced us with a clip for their 2018 single ‘Feel Alone’, a track we described as “overwhelmingly immersive with a fragile undertone.” Their latest single ‘Heart’ picks up where ‘Feel Alone’ left off, yet ultimately trades the previous track’s vulnerability for something a little more assertive, resulting in perhaps Grand Pine’s most self-assured music yet.
After opening gently with a simmering acoustic guitar and frontman Guy Perkins’ striking voice, the track unfolds - first with waves of swelling keys, before the guitars expand and a stomping rhythm section fills out the instrumentation. Meanwhile, Guy’s voice still sits front and centre, weaving a poignant melody that chimes through the layers of the ebbing soundscape, before gaining confidence and soaring on top. Despite the band sounding more bold than ever, there’s still a good deal of darkness lurking within the track, and Guy explains “‘Heart’ was written about the fragility of relationships, based on mutual emotional dependence and the need for emotional and physical comfort, even at the detriment of your own long-term psyche.”
Accompanying the track is a masterful video created by Tom Dunphy, which takes the track’s stormy disposition up another level with its captivating visuals and illusive storyline. Speaking about the clip, Guy elaborates “the video was something I conceived with director and friend, Tom Dunphy. The song always had very strong visuals to me and I could always see myself playing it in an infinitely empty, dark space. Sort of an eerie echo chamber. Tom was the one who suggested tying it in with “real world” and that’s when the story started to come together. It’s a sort of exploration between the necessity of loneliness for the appreciation of togetherness.”
