Nat Vazer - Like Demi
Nat Vazer - Like Demi
Off the back of her charismatic new single ‘Like Demi’ which dropped yesterday, we have the pleasure of premiering the new clip from mesmerising bedroom-pop specialistic Nat Vazer.
Following on from last September’s We Used To Have Real Conversations, local indie-rocker Nat Vazer is making up for lost time with her latest cut ‘Like Demi’. Picking up where the previous EP left off, ‘Like Demi’ is punchy and direct, while still masterfully blurring the edges of the pigeonholes that Nat might be placed in.
Opening with some gentle guitar twinkles as her intoxicating voice floats dreamily on top, we’re lulled into Nat’s cosy world as she crafts an emotive vignette that brims with self-assurance. Just as we’re getting comfortable though, ‘Like Demi’ broadens with a driving beat and crunchy guitar chords, and the track’s atmosphere shifts - now flirting somewhere between 90’s indie rock and 60’s pop. Her lyrics remain as vital as ever though, and as the track blasts into an engulfing outro, we’re struck by how compellingly powerful and poignant the track manages to be at once.
Speaking about the track, Nat shares “when I was about 8, I fell in love with Demi Moore’s character in the movie Ghost, a widowed visual artist living in New York. When my brother and I were kids, my dad used to cut our hair, so one day I decided to ask him to cut mine super short “just like Demi Moore in Ghost”. My dad got a plastic bowl out of the kitchen, threw it on my little head and started cutting around the bowl like there was no tomorrow... It became a controversial topic at school, where my teachers would get reports that some mysterious boy kept entering the girls’ toilets.”
Out today, the new clip pairs with the track’s themes of self-belief and personal assurance, as we follow Nat throughout a day - getting ready in the morning, riding her bike and practising with the band. Just as the song shines without having to oversell itself, the clip perfectly echos the track’s nostalgic feel with its simple shots and hazy visuals.
