CLAMM - Liar
Words by James Lynch
Friday 15th November, 2019
Alongside the announcement of their forthcoming debut album Beseech Me, we’ve got the absolute pleasure of premiering ‘Liar’, the latest fistful of blistering garage-punk from local power trio CLAMM.
Since emerging seemingly from nowhere just 12 months ago, CLAMM have spent most of 2019 marking themselves as one of Melbourne’s most exciting new bands, thanks to their openly belligerent tracks and a thrilling live show. Following on from the release of ‘Dog’ in April, they’re back in a big way today with ‘Liar’, as they begin gearing up to drop their debut album Beseech Me early next year.

After opening with a wall of wailing feedback, ‘Liar’ blasts into a sprawl of fiery guitars while a driving rhythm section pushes along underneath. Propulsive from the get-go, its all fuzzed-out guitars and machine-gun drums, the space clearing just enough for leadman Jack Summers to have his caustic roar heard over the chaos. Despite his frustrated lyrics, Jack is commanding and relentless up front, forcing us to clutch on for the ride as the frenzy of noise careens around him. That said, it’s almost impossible to look away regardless, and just as the track is hitting its climax, the band pull a frantic gear shift and rocket away as ‘Liar’ spirals out.

Speaking about the track, Jack shares “the song is about mental health - it’s about dealing with a voice in your head that isn’t always telling the truth. I guess things aren’t always as they seem and I’ve had a funny year working how my own mental health. This song in a way is maybe showing some of the frustration I’ve had with it all.”

Listen to 'Liar' above, and catch CLAMM launching the single on Saturday, November 30th, at Nighthawks. CLAMM's debut album Beseech Me comes out January 17th, 2020.
