Taylah Carroll -
Sometimes Good People Do Bad Things
Following the release of her enigmatic single ‘Sometimes Good People Do Bad Things’ last month, local indie-rock songstress Taylah Carroll is back with a striking clip that leaves us transfixed by its stunning simplicity.
‘Sometimes Good People Do Bad Things’ plays like the soundtrack to a Western film montage, where the protagonist reflects on their misdeeds and sins. Carroll’s vocals are rich and bold up front, with a deep confidence that is hard to find in such a new artist. Coupled with an assertive bassline, rich tremolo guitars and sparse calculated toms, each instrument perfectly complements each other. The track gives the impression of The Middle Kids crossed with Lana Del Ray, with some Fleetwood Mac thrown in for good measure. It’s powerful and gutsy, and Taylah’s delivery speaks with a certainty of character both enthralling and distant.
Filmed at Victoria’s Bushrangers Bay by local filmmaker Nick Mckk, the new clip has a stoic Carroll standing on a sand bank tapping a tambourine while wind stirs around her, before two unknown people approach and embrace her. Despite being shot in just one take, the minimalistic approach to the video perfectly pairs with the wide-open lawlessness of the track.
Speaking about the experiences shooting the clip, Taylah shares “it was so windy that I had tears running down my face, and I couldn’t hear the track very well. It was playing in double time, and I was trying to lip sync and tambourine (is that the verb?) in time, whilst the beat disappeared and reappeared over the racket of the wind. That concentration and restraint is super apparent in my performance, which I hated at first but it’s grown on me, and again, I think it adds to the drama.”
Similarly, Nick saw the shoot as a rewarding challenge - “we initially wanted dancing in this clip, a couple of old folk swaying together, but Taylah and I both felt that it took away from something more impactful. Not a whole heap happens, but that’s the idea. Taylah brings it together and the location does the rest of the work.”
