Quivers - When It Breaks
Quivers - When It Breaks
Currently in the midst of their first tour around Australia to celebrate their latest dose of charming guitar-pop ‘When It Breaks’, we’ve got the pleasure of premiering the new film clip from Melbourne via Tasmania jangle-pop crew Quivers today.
It’s a bit of a surprise that Quivers haven’t yet done the rounds around Australia, considering their undeniably local sound and their Hobart origins. However, thanks to support overseas from the likes of KEXP and NPR, they’ve trekked through America, Canada and New Zealand, but now they’re finally back on home soil to take their latest slice of shimmering indie-rock ‘When It Breaks’ around the country.
Opening with a swirl of warm 12-string guitars, ‘When It Breaks’ quickly picks up a driving groove, backed by a steady rhythm section as the interweaving guitars continue to jangle and chime. The tangle of instruments subsides as frontman Sam J. Nicholson moves in with his smooth vocals, carrying a poignant melody that is instantly made lighter by the wide-eyed earnestness of his voice, before the rest of the band join him for an endearing singalong chorus. As the track chugs on, it’s hard not to feel affected by the striking atmosphere Quivers have conjured, as they simultaneously evoke the euphoria of power-pop and the doleful charm of Australian jangle, and leave us feeling wearily optimistic in between.
Out today, the new video finds Quivers lost in the wilderness of Victoria’s Yarra Ranges. Directed by Nina Renee, the clip masterfully plays with the contradictory moods of ’When It Breaks’, as the visibly worn band stare dewey-eyed at the camera amongst the stark scenery, between shots of blooming fauna and glistening sunlight. Speaking about the clip, Sam shares “the film clip was shot in the snow of Mount Donna Buang. It plays around with melancholy and hope, and is all about our unreliable memories of where we were and where we want to go. Bandaged and bruised, it walks a line between the sunny sounds of the song and its darker lyrics."
