Bones and Jones - Bees
Today we have the pleasure of sharing the new single and clip for ‘Bees’, the title track from Bones and Jones’ upcoming record. Playing like a lost rock n’ roll nugget from the 60s, the track was in fact rediscovered by chance when vocalist/guitarist Jasper Jolley stumbled across a curious Photobooth video of himself - and we’re very glad he did.
The third in a flurry of singles from Surf Coast staples Bones and Jones, ‘Bees’ provides us with one final taste of their charming retro rock n’ roll before the release of their sophomore album at the end of the month. Despite sharing the delightful horn-and-strings infused ballad ‘Working Out’ and its accompanying video just a couple of weeks ago, and the wonky pop classic ‘Donna’ shortly before that, Bones are back with another taste of their much anticipated second full-length Bees.
‘Bees’ begins with the familiar buzzing sounds of the songs namesake swarming in each ear - through which a chugging acoustic guitar rises, shaking itself free of a woozy tape drawl. As soon as the guitar finds itself in tune, a driving country-western groove kicks in and the song takes off with a delightful rhythm. Short and sharp (clocking in under two minutes), the song winds its way frantically through punchy verses and harmony-laden choruses with expert precision - meanwhile Jasper ruminates on the plight of the bees who keep the natural world turning and our toast sweet.
The accompanying video (made by long-time collaborator Willem Kingma) features the Bones gang on the run from an angry swarm of bees. Shaded with a vintage film aesthetic often adopted by Kingma and Bones, we see the six band members ducking and dodging with entertaining quirk through sand dunes, beach shacks and paddocks as their buzzing pursuers close in, eventually engulfing a lagging member.
Through some trademark Trouble Juice investigative journalism, we learnt that this song had been sitting on the shelf for some time before the band rediscovered it in an interesting manner. Jasper had written the song in high school before the formation of Bones and Jones, yet the song had slipped out of mind over the following years - until he discovered a Photobooth video of himself singing and dancing to the song in his lounge room after school, wearing nothing but his undies and accompanied only by an acoustic guitar. This discovery prompted him to take the song to the band, whose treatment brings it to our ears today. Unfortunately, at this time Trouble Juice have been unable to acquire this footage.
