Video Premiere:
Snowy Band - Love You To Death
Words by James Lynch
Wednesday 29th January, 2020
Today we have the pleasure of premiering the debut single from Snowy Band - elusively compelling, ‘Love You To Death’ feels restrained and delicate at first, yet the striking power of Snowy’s songwriting enables it to become something else completely.
With such a constant presence over the Melbourne music scene for the past decade, it’s somewhat surprising that Liam ‘Snowy’ Halliwell can still find new places to travel musically. But while his latest endeavour still seems reminiscent of his past projects, namely his deft jangle-pop-smarts from The Ocean Party or the more off-kilter detours of No Local, Snowy Band may be his most forthright music yet.

Hypnotically sparse, ‘Love You To Death’ somehow manages to feel subtle and grandiose at the same time. After opening with a swirl of subdued guitars while a stunted groove loiters behind, Snowy’s hushed vocals take the lead, weaving a poignant melody that teeters between sounding languid and intensely emotive. As more interweaving guitars enter the fray the soundscape blooms open, yet Snowy’s voice remains up close and personal, making each pronounced lyric feel profoundly intimate, almost confidential.

Speaking about the track, Snowy shares “‘[Love You To Death’ is] a song addressing the elusive explanation of unconditional love. An ode to enduring friendships, life-long bonds calcified over time and distance.” Intricate without feeling overwhelming, ‘Love You To Death’ sprawls elegantly, and as the emotion amounts Snowy’s voice tangles with his bandmates (Emma Russack, Nat Pavlovic of Dianas and Dylan Young of Way Dynamic). Yet, as the haze dissipates at the track’s end to abruptly conclude with just Snowy’s voice, we fully feel the weight of the song crash in on us.

Snowy Band’s debut album Audio Commentary is set to drop on Friday, March 27, via Osbourne Again, and is available to pre-order here. In the meantime, you can catch SB at the Tote front bar every Tuesday in February.
