Grace Snow - Tower of Terror
Words by James Lynch
Tuesday 3rd March, 2020
On her debut solo single, local multi-instrumentalist Grace Snow has defied all expectations and blasted us with a relentless fuzz-pop belter - explosive and chaotic, 'Tower of Terror' has us very excited to see where Grace takes this new project next.
Recognisable as part of local indie-rockers Barefoot Bowls Club and emerging jangle duo Bucketa Chips, Grace Snow’s solo debut finds her trading in sunny guitar-pop for something a little more frantic. Recorded by Grace in the living room of her family home with acts like FIDLAR, LOSER and The Pretty Littles as reference points, ‘Tower of Terror’ maintains all the charm of Grace’s other projects while turning the heat up a whole heap.

After opening with some quirky TV show samples, ‘Tower of Terror’ picks up the pace with a fiery guitar lead while a stomping backbeat thunders behind. Moments later, the track fully erupts into a tangle of erratic guitars and propulsive machine-gun drums, as Grace’s blown-out vocals steer the way through the careening instrumentation. As the lo-fi layers of sound continue to amass and warp, we’re soon completely submerged by a wall of spluttering fuzz and dizzying grooves - yet crucially, Grace’s undeniable affinity for clever hooks is never lost amongst the blur and chaos.

Clocking it at just over four minutes, it’s not so much a race to the finish line as it is a sonic bombardment, but by the time ‘Tower of Terror’ has finished its business with us, we’re just as likely to hit the replay button as we are to be ducking for cover.
