Today we have the pleasure of premiering the debut EP from local post-punk duo Moon Cup - defying their minimal set-up, their self-titled EP is an invigorating yet poignant listen, that hits in an overwhelmingly powerful way.
With a mission statement that reads “nothing but drums, bass and the truth”, it might be tempting to assume that Moon Cup’s music would be stark and sentimental. Instead, this two-piece, spearheaded by Rita Khayat (who you may recognise from Spiral Perm), do the exact opposite - grimy, relentless and explosively forthright, the four tracks heard across Moon Cup spotlight the emerging act at their most thrilling.

Opening with ‘Cut From The Cast’, the EP kicks off with a slow-burning track that builds around a constant bass chug which tangles with Rita’s acidic vocals as the tension amounts, eventually erupting into an explosion of noise while a thundering groove pulsates underneath. If the opening track is to set the tone of the EP, lead single ‘Picking Fights’ pulls everything into place, as Rita works herself into a frenzy amongst waves of swelling bass fuzz. Combining the duo’s disarmingly honest songwriting with volatile post-punk blasts, it’s a clear highlight that has us unsure if we should be listening intently or ducking for cover.

Up next, ‘Refusing to Beat’ is turbulent and menacing, powered by a propulsive beat that gives the track an intoxicatingly unstable quality, before the atmosphere simmers down at ‘Fighting For’. Rounding out the EP, ‘Fighting For’ amasses Moon Cup’s strengths for one final blitz - the frenetic, almost mesmerising bass and drum combos, the incessant grooves that anchor the band, and Rita’s enigmatic performances at the centre, as she manages to sound as vulnerable as she is commanding upfront.
