HOTS - Land Animal
HOTS - Land Animal
Today we’ve got the pleasure of premiering the latest single from local garage powerhouse HOTS - ‘Land Animal’ is an explosion of gloriously unhinged rock ’n’ roll, that bursts with the perfect amount of grit and plenty of thrilling energy.
Following on from their debut release Some Like It…, HOTS are back with the first taste of their forthcoming second album Shit Capitalists. Picking up where the previous album left off, ‘Land Animal’ blends HOTS’ primal garage-punk instincts with a frenetic backbone - which means the track’s contagious grooves are just as potent as the waves of noise that fling them at us.
Considering HOTS describe the track as a “homage to dancing as a means to exorcising the beast of the human condition”, it shouldn’t be a surprise that ‘Land Animal’ has enough visceral power to simultaneously purge us and get us moving. But if you weren’t quite sure, the opening moments of the track make it crystal clear, as we’re immediately swamped by a barrage of fuzzed-out guitar chords while a rocketing rhythm section rumbles alongside. Powered by a syncopated stomp, the instrumentation teeters between tight and sprawling, building a thrillingly giddy atmosphere for frontman Travis Marke to emerge out of.
Sounding like a drunken preacher, Marke is commanding, almost enigmatic up front, yet there’s an undeniable gleam in his eye as his voice stretches and cracks with every spirited hook. Following an irreverent anti-solo which perfectly plays up the track’s careening grooves and reckless charm, HOTS storm into one final blitz, their shouted group vocals rivalling the furious layers of noise before the track finally blazes away.
To accompany the single, the band have shared a new clip that cleverly matches the track’s manic energy. It’s a strikingly simple concept, but the outcome is as bizarrely addictive as the song itself. If you’re not too keen on creepy-crawlies, we’d recommend averting your gaze - otherwise, embrace your inner animal and check out the clip below.
