Words by James Lynch and Sam Bellino

Today we’re thrilled to be premiering the new EP from Perth duo Segue, ahead of its official release this Friday. On I Get It,, the pair have crafted a collection of dazzling synth-pop, blending minimal electronics and art-pop sensibilities with a glorious 80’s sheen.
Following from the success of their 2018 debut full-length Primary Ties, Segue are back with I Get It. Led by songwriter and producer Jeremy Segal and backed by collaborator Daniel Zeljko, their third release finds the duo exploring deeper into the world of lo-fi electro-pop, this collection of songs feeling as pleasantly reminiscent of dance music of the past as it is firmly rooted in the present.

Equally emotive and infectious at once, there’s a clear atmosphere to the EP that is set from the opening moments. While the backdrop builds with warm, humming synths and a driving backbeat, the title track expands around Segal’s soft vocals, his evocative lyrics picking at the instrumental’s emotional undertones and bringing them to the surface. While the track could play as a sunny indie-pop bop, we instantly realise there’s far more than meets the eye.

It’s a reoccurring theme across I Get It, which the press release acknowledges as it reveals the key influence of dance and ambient music, pushing Segue to “work with mood and texture rather than focusing on a particular theme or subject.” Next up, ‘Only Light’ is buoyant and playful, yet remains anchored by a melancholic melody, and this is felt again on previous single ‘2 Things’ - a track that could be the EP’s goofiest moment with its off-kilter charm, but Segal is far from being ironic, his wide-eyed vocals embedding the track with meaning.

I Get It reveals its truest colours at its most tender moments however. ‘Beneath The Window’ grows around a backdrop of subtle, fluctuating synths, leaving plenty of space for Segal’s gentle voice to chime with conviction. Similarly, ‘Shooting the Breeze’ rounds out the EP with swelling keys and minimal percussion, and as the burgeoning synths eventually overtake Segal’s assured vocals to ride the song out, there’s a profound sense that both instrumental and lyrics are telling the same emotive story.

I Get It is out officially this Friday via Group Therapy Records - head to segue.bandcamp.com to grab the EP on limited edition cassette.
