Homebodies -
Staying In with Anti Fade Records
Words by James Lynch
Thursday 12th November, 2020
I guess lockdown is kinda on its last legs now, but we’ve still got some more buds we wanted to catch up with so Homebodies ain’t going anywhere yet.
Between his own musical commitments - a member of The Living Eyes, Smarts, Ausmuteants, Cereal Killer and probably a few more - Billy Gardener is the mastermind behind Anti Fade Records, arguably Australia’s best export for garage, punk and weirdo-pop. Originally formed in Geelong and more recently based in Melbourne, the label has become something of an epicentre for a growing community of local bands, most of which who’ve emerged from Billy’s hometown, a place he’s dubbed as the “new centre of the universe” at least three times now. Where other labels might’ve been forced to take their foot off the gas this year, Anti Fade have had one of their busiest, and strongest, yet - with a slew of releases from the likes of Alien Nosejob, Parsnip, Bananagun, RMFC and Vintage Crop.

Here's what else Billy has been up to during lockdown.

What are you reading?
Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis.

What are you watching?
Not much at all. Enjoyed the Ginger Baker doco recently. What a maniac! Actually both this and the book above were recommended to me by my friend Albert.

What are you listening to?
Right now; Neon Sunset with Annaliese. She’s playing Van Halen.

Anything happening in the kitchen?
Not enough! I love cooking but haven’t done anywhere near as much of it as I’d like to this lockdown.

What’s keeping you busy?
Work at SoundMerch which is great! I love working there. And the record label - combo of the two keeps me on my toes.

Anything you’re doing differently?
Not really haha. Very boring answer but not much is new this year.

What’s something keeping you inspired?
My friends. Even if I ain’t seen em for yonks.

Best ways to support the community at the moment?
Shop at all the small locals where you can: record stores, bars, small grocery stores, takeaway etc. Not the big chains. Take part in fundraisers for a good cause if ya can. Subscribe to community radio. Check in on your friends!
Head to antifaderecords.bandcamp.com to dip into their back catalogue/check out a whole bunch of records worth buying, and keep up with everything Billy and the label are up to by following them below.
