Following on from the release of the jazzy ‘All I Do’ in February, which arrived alongside the announcement that Redspencer would be treating listeners to a second full-length album after a near five year break, ‘Happy’ picks up where the previous single left off to instantly re-immerse us in the (dare I say) dreamworld that the trio are crafting on Dreamworld.

Awash with hazy tangles of guitar over a downtempo groove, ‘Happy’ expands with a stack of stunning vocals that emerge and spiral around the woozy instrumentation. As considered and graceful as they are effortless, these crooned harmonies continually interweave and overlap before evolving into a glorious kaleidoscope of unassuming hooks at the track’s evocative chorus. As Dave McMillan explains ‘Happy’ was “written about depression, using irony to paint how silly mental health advice can seem from behind the lens of someone deep in the dump”, it’s fitting that the track feels this easy to get lost in, simultaneously wrestling between feeling lethargic and spirited.

Accompanying the single today is a new clip created by Gareth Harrison, which trades in the track’s serene atmosphere for something a little more eccentric. Centred around the infomercial gone wrong and rounded out with a triumphant cricketing scene, the clip doesn’t exactly give much away about the track, but does hook us in to find out where Redspencer might take us next with the arrival of Dreamworld in the coming months.
