The Oogars - Waiting All Day
Today we have the pleasure of sharing a first listen to ‘Waiting All Day’, a new dose of woozy garage-psych from rising Northern Rivers rockers The Oogars, that arrives alongside the announcement that their long-awaited debut EP is finally on the horizon.
Since their formation in 2018, the rise of The Oogars has been steady but just as extensive. With only three singles to their name so far, they’ve established a burgeoning presence amidst Australia’s radiant neo-psych community and shared stages with The Babe Rainbow and Nice Biscuit (plus in 24 hours they’ll be adding the almighty King Gizzard to that list); and now after a long wait, they’ve revealed their fittingly titled debut EP Waiting All Day is set to drop in early June through cult record slingers Third Eye Stimuli.
If the release of the EP’s title track today is to set the tone for what’s to come, we’re in for a treat. Opening with a swirl of chiming guitars over an unhurried groove, there’s an immediate sense of restlessness despite the laidback energy, a mood that’s strengthened by Tanisha Cook's sun-drenched vocals that feel as dreamy as they are bold. By the chorus though, the track shifts gears, picking up the pace slightly as we’re hit with a stack of harmonies while the shimmering guitars tangle and weave around us, before The Oogars let the track ride itself out with a mystical guitar break and crafty hooks aplenty.
In the same way that the free-spirited sound of ‘Waiting All Day’ is underpinned by something slightly more turbulent, the track’s lyrics also seem to carry a greater weight than meets the eye. Speaking about the song, The Oogars explain "it's about reaching that point where you feel like you have nothing more to give and you are calling on something greater. It’s the darkness before things eventually begin to lighten, the stagnancy before the flow."
