Tug - Rhythm
Tug - Rhythm
Today we’ve got the pleasure of sharing the latest blast of uncanny and explosive psychedelia from Melbourne five-piece Tug - ‘Rhythm’ is a sprawling second taste of their forthcoming album that has us very intrigued to see what comes next.
Hot on the heels of their latest single ‘Droid Party’, local rock ’n’ roll crew Tug have returned today with ‘Rhythm’. Where ‘Droid Party’ was a stomping first teaser of their forthcoming second album, ‘Rhythm’ leans into the band’s more disorientating tendencies to offer a second taste of where the album might be heading.
Built around a warped and constantly evolving groove, ‘Rhythm’ opens with a skittering beat before shifting into its unnerving first verse, as vocalist Mitch Peters tells us with his disarmingly eerie vocals, “rhythm flowing through me every second, every day.” It’s a fitting beginning, because as the track continues to unravel we’re sent spiralling into a flurry of psych-rock guitar and sinister vocal hooks as each rhythmic motif twists and contorts. By the track’s end, Tug have transported us through intricate psychedelia, charging garage-rock and finally into a sprawl of mellowed out psych-pop, as we’re immersed in the tangle of eccentric guitar interplay and meandering grooves.
We reached out to uncover a little more about the track, and Mitch was simultaneously mysterious and to-the-point, explaining “the song changes rhythm every section which links to the lyrics that talk about a changing self... the different rhythms you fall into in life, ya know?” Best thing to do is take the journey yourself it seems.
