Back In Town (Live at Bighouse Arts)
With the news that their long-awaited debut album is finally on the way, Melbourne indie-folk sweethearts Grand Pine have shared a new live recording of their cinematic slowburner ‘Back in Town’ to accompany the announcement that Hold Me Down will be revealed this September.
Following on from the release of ‘Back In Town’ way back in 2018, Grand Pine have today released a stunning live rendition of the track from Bighouse Arts in Coburg North. Fans of Grand Pine will appreciate this new production of the lush song that had its floral laden, 18th century themed official music video released at the start of this year.
Featuring Guy Perkins (vocals, rhythm guitar), Connor Black-Harry (vocals, lead guitar), Pelaya Arapakis (drums, vocals) and Mike Ridley (keys, vocals) with bass by Angus Radley, the live performance is a beautiful close-up of the musical chemistry between the band and a balm for those who have missed seeing Grand Pine play live recently. The new arrangements see the band moving into folk-rock territory, swapping brass arrangements for clever atmospheric guitar and synth parts. Grounding bass drum and snare hits provide a solid and grounding force that help to lift the song into a beautiful crescendo moment we have come to love from Grand Pine.
With the new rendition recorded by Connor Black-Harry, who also produced the band’s previous songs in his bedroom studio during 2018 and 2019, this take also brings to the forefront the seamless harmonies of all members, especially the complimentary milky vocal tones of Black-Harry and Perkins.
The band’s re-release of ‘Back in Town’ is a lovely gift for the middle of winter. Though the themes of the track are personal and relational, it’s hard not to feel a universal resonance hearing the lyrics "into my warm embrace, into my eyes, into the golden days, in my own time". The song is uplifting and feels timely, as things begin to open after a slow start to 2021.
It’s the beginning of an exciting time for Grand Pine, with their debut album Hold Me Down set to drop on Friday September 24th. We can only assume there’s plenty more things to come from Grand Pine over the following months, but in the meantime, you can enjoy this live clip before catching them at a show later in the year.
