Premiere:
Angeles - Plastic
Words by James Lynch
Monday 30th August, 2021

Ahead of its release on Wednesday via Sunset Pig, today we’ve been treated to an early listen of Sydney alt-rocker Angeles’ new single ‘Plastic’, an expansive post-punk blitz that catches the project’s shapeshifting sound at its sharpest and most captivating.
Following on from the release of ‘We Fled’ in July, ‘Plastic’ is a bit of a gear shift for Angeles, trading the latest single’s breezy atmosphere and shimmering hooks for something a little more urgent.

Built around a charging groove, ‘Plastic’ bursts open with a propulsive rhythm section before widening with a tangle of sprawling guitar leads that expand and swirl restlessly before finally settling as project mastermind Pluto Sotiropoulos’ vocals drift in. Like on Angeles’ previous releases, Pluto’s voice is as husky and evocative as ever, but this time around his words are loaded with grit as they cut through the soundscape, even so as the layers of fuzz amount at each pumping chorus to wash the track in a disorientating, searing haze.

Speaking about 'Plastic', Pluto explains, “this song is one of disillusionment. The feeling of holding someone up to the light only to see through them. A moment of empowerment that pushes you further, forcing you to trust in yourself.” It’s fitting then that the track’s driving pace refuses to let up for its full runtime, as Angeles sounds more self-assured than ever amidst the thrilling controlled chaos.

‘Plastic’ is officially out this Wednesday through Sunset Pig Records.
