So, what’s it to you?
w/ Thibault

Thibault seems to be on everyone's lips recently, and for very good reason! The long awaited project of Nicole Thibault has adorned the Melbourne music scene in recent years with their harmonic mix of atmospheric pop and precarious arrangements. In releasing their debut LP last year via Chapter Music, Or Not Thibaut is a true whimsical treat, especially in these grey months of lockdown and isolation.

Nicole kindly took us through and spoke about the records that coincide with moments in her life.
The saddest record you've ever listened to
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland - John Barry, 1972

This is a record from my childhood that really affected me. It was otherworldly and I found the minor keys really alluring and sad and it really haunted me.

The record that helped pioneer your vision
Work and Non Work - Broadcast

I really love 60’s music and experimental synthesiser sounds and when I heard Broadcast it was like all my dreams had come true. It’s also especially important to me because it wasn’t everyday that there was a person out the front of the band who wasn’t a man! Trish Keenan was so cool and would just stand there and the music spoke for itself. It was a very rare sound and sight to see.

The record you feel is always overlooked

I don’t think I have one?? I think most of the stuff I like is overlooked probably, I don’t know!

Maybe a quadraphonic record I have that doesn’t work really on stereo systems haha!
Spaced Out by Enoch Light, 1969. I love how the songs disappear when they’re in the “quadraphonic” part of the song. Also the cover is so cool - a homage to Barbarella (I’m assuming).
'The record that makes you feel at home'
Space Age Bachelor Pad Music - Stereolab, 1993

I have such fond memories of this album listening to it as I fell asleep. It’s so dreamy and calming.

The record that got you into the piano
Mickey Mouse March

'Mickey Mouse March', because I worked it out by ear and got so excited I wanted to play piano from then. Probably in hindsight it’s a pretty simple melody but that feeling of “wow” I can work out a song by ear was really something and made me feel really good.

The record you'll always come back to
Probably any record by Françoise Hardy - any of her 60’s records that is. I’m yet to venture into the 80’s albums of hers. I’ll get there I’m sure. I’m just a bit hesitant now though, it’s probably ahead of it’s time and I just haven’t caught up to it yet.
Or Not Thibault is out now through Chapter Music - head to thibaultband.bandcamp.com to grab the album on limited vinyl.
