So, what’s it to you?
w/ Zoe Monk
Words by James Donovan
Monday 27th September, 2021
From her talents across a slew of red hot bands like Eggy, Thibault and The Stroppies, to popping up behind the emails at Flightless Records and working the bar at One Year (R.I.P), Zoe Monk’s down to earth presence in the music community of Melbourne is something of a comfort. Having been self-taught guitar at 17 and discovering the synthesiser not long after, Zoe’s eclectic appetite for genre and style is ever growing - branching from krautrock, country rap, to all its oddities in between.

We were lucky enough to catch up with Zoe to have a chat about a few key records throughout her life.
The most intimate record you’ve ever heard
Jungle Obsession - Nino Nardini & Roger Roger

Pretty hard to go past this one. The percussion sits so close, and the strings make you wanna weep. It’s a journey through moods, and a masterclass in atmosphere. 10/10.

A favourite debut record
Montero - Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X is so far ahead of the game in every way, and by far the coolest person on earth. No doubt I’ll be obsessing over the record for a long time to come.

A record that influenced you
IV - Faust

This one has no rules. It’s full of sarcasm and irony and that’s what I love most. It’s not too serious, but it’s also really beautiful and expressive. The sax and strings are super raw, blown out synths hop into harpsichord breaks, the guitars are manic then delicate. The whole thing is so bonkers, and feels like a big joke we’re not in on.

A record that makes you feel at home
Future Nostalgia - Dua Lipa

I’m lucky to live with my besties, and Future Nostalgia reminds me of being at home trying to make the most out of the times. The whole album is great, and pop is the best.

A record that showed you the ability to perform
Crab Day - Cate Le Bon

Ooo yeah I don’t think any record has ever made as much sense to me as this one. Just clicks. It made me realise that the idea and intention of a song can be more important than the music behind it. Take the tools you have and make it work for you.

The record that reminds you of your mum
Odyssey Number Five - Powderfinger

This one big time when I was a kid. Anywhere in the car, or any bbq at home. Bit of Odyssey Number Five. Iconic album.
Eggy's debut album Bravo! is out now through Spoilsport Records - head to eggyband.bandcamp.com to grab the album on limited vinyl.
