Soren - On The Sound
Words by James Lynch
Tuesday 28th September, 2021

Ahead if its release this Thursday, today we’ve got a sneak peak at rising indie-pop whizkid Soren’s new single ‘On The Sound’, a burst of expansive alt-pop that gleams with Soren’s distinctive otherworldly soundscapes and imaginative production.
Currently on the rise as a go-to local producer and bandmate, working alongside the likes of Stella Farnan, Clover Blue and The Tesky Brothers, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Soren is an equally compelling songwriter in his own right. Following on from ’The Glare’, the eclectic first taste of his forthcoming debut full-length The Perfect Place To Hide, ‘On The Sound’ reveals another notch on Soren’s already impressive belt.

Instantly disorientating, ‘On The Sound’ opens with a glitching synthesiser throb before a charged backbeat emerges, anchoring the immersive soundscape with a thumping groove as ethereal layers and spacey atmospherics swirl around the peripheries. From the get-go, the track rides the line between dreamy and haphazard, as Soren actively seems to delight in shifting gears in hope of bucking listeners off the pulse - one moment his wistful vocals are beaming through the middle of the track, the next they’re soaring in glorious falsetto and moments later, they’ve turned robotic and are chanting at us from amidst a tangle of unsettling rhythms.

There’s no denying Soren’s pop sensibilities, or his music nerd imagination either - before long, ‘On The Sound’ moves seamlessly into a dazzling indie-rock chorus, loaded with precise hooks and gleaming guitars, and from there the layers continue to amount. However, as each musical motif blends together, refracting what’s come before and shining it in an even more wondrous light, the result is thrillingly captivating.

'On The Sound' is officially out everywhere this Thursday.
