Ausecuma Beats - Tombo
Words by James Lynch
Thursday 7th October, 2021
Following on from the release of ‘Sallier’ in August, percussion powerhouse Ausecuma Beats are back today with ‘Tombo’, another of their joyous groove-fuelled excursions and a new peek at what to expect from their forthcoming album Musso.
According to their press release, Ausecuma Beats are “more than just a band, they are a philosophy.” The nine-piece group, led by djembe player Boubacar Gaye, thrive when they’re working as a whole, when each of their backgrounds and musical experience can blur together into one frenetic and vibrant union. Previous single ‘Sallier’ was a prime example of what they do best, which is crafting an explosive blur of their unstoppable and inspired grooves.

Today we’re thrilled to be sharing a first taste of ‘Tombo’, a track that picks up where ‘Sallier’ left off and immediately dunks as amidst of swirl of weaving rhythms, exuberant horns and joyous group vocals. For its entire four minute runtime, the track is a radiant tangle of complex rhythms and sunny melodies, and even though at times this makes for a dizzying listening experience, ’Tombo’ is all the more compelling for it.

On a close listen, as the press release point out, we can notice the way that the band share rhythmic motifs across the tune - one member introducing and repeating an idea, before allowing another to take the reins while adding their own spin. The idea ties in directly with the musical themes of ‘Tombo’, which celebrates the relationship between a student and teacher. Speaking about the track, Boubacar explains that ‘Tombo’ is a dedication to his teacher in Senegal - “it’s very important to me to pay respect to my teacher. This song is about friendship but also forgiveness too. He took me when I was 16, he shared his knowledge with me, became a friend and a dad to me at the same time, teaching me how to move through life. Things I am doing now are because that teacher gave it to me.”

On a whole, Boubacar also reveals that ‘Tombo’ serves as something of a mission statement for the entire forthcoming album. “All the knowledge we bring to this album has come from someone who in their turn gave it to us. If you like the music, you hear it, you dance, great! But remember, someone created this, they gave it to us, and now Ausecuma Beats are giving it to you. So we dedicate this album to our teachers.” If when Musso drops in November it’s as fun as this, we’re in for a real treat.

Musso is out on Friday November 5th through Music In Exile - head to ausecumabeats.bandcamp.com to pre-order the new album on limited vinyl.
