Lewis Goldmark - Psycho City
Off the back of the release of Lewis Goldmark’s latest single ‘Psycho City’ earlier this month, today we’ve got the pleasure of sharing a restless new clip that expands on the track’s unpredictable indie-rock smarts with its sprawling visuals and evocative atmosphere.
Despite only releasing his debut single in 2020, Lewis Goldmark (or Liam Judson to his parents) has had a hand in the creation of some of Australia’s best alternative pop music over the past 15 odd years - as a key member of loved Sydney psychedelic rock group Belles Will Ring and more recently Magnetic Heads, plus the mastermind producer behind records from Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Cloud Control, Bloods and more.
Under his Lewis Goldmark pseudonym though, Lewis makes shapeshifting indie-rock that expands on his eye for intricate songwriting and ear for clever production, his debut single ‘Twilighting’ blending a swirl of chiming pop guitars together with a driving groove and tasteful noise-rock atmospherics. This time around, ‘Psycho City’ seems to take the contradicting elements of his sound one step further - the melodies are woozy and reliable, instantly evoking 60’s pop heavyweights, while the instrumentation feels punchy and untethered, sprawling freely as the song expands open. In a way, the track is hard to keep up with as it continually twists and warps, revealing the immense scope of Lewis’ songwriting and somehow blending it into four minutes of enigmatic pop.
Speaking about his forthcoming album, Lewis explains these songs were written after relocating to the Blue Mountains where he could look back over his previous home with a new perspective; “I stare down at the sprawl at night. The lights that spread out all the way to the city which looks like Oz at the end of the yellow brick road. Looking over the suburbs, they are so pretty but I know they’re not because I grew up in them. My songs belong in those beautiful suburban lights. Full of sin, full of shame, and full of life." Fittingly, the new clip for ‘Psycho City’ seems to blend these worlds together. Featuring performance footage shot and directed by Lauren Crew and edited by Lewis, it tangles the grittiness of city life with a dreamy sense of nostalgia, playing as a collage of everything that makes the city alluring and unsettling at once.
