Forever Son - Bone Sugar
Words by James Lynch
Friday 29th October, 2021

Two years on from his last release, Victorian singer-songwriter Forever Son has re-emerged today with news of his forthcoming sophomore album, and a fuzzed-out new single ‘Bone Sugar’ that twists his usual folk-rock sound to reveal the exhilarating scope of the new record.
Under his Forever Son moniker, Jack Robbins has spent the last five years crafting wide-eyed folk-rock, anchored by his rich, soulful voice and a clear affinity for classic songwriting smarts. In 2017, he released his debut album 10 Months, a collection of reliable alt-folk that jangled and gleamed earnestly and evocatively, and since then he’s been slowly drip-feeding us tastes of his forthcoming sophomore release.

Today Forever Son is back with the news that his follow-up album - titled Welcome To Alchemy Park - is set to drop in early December, and to tide us over until then he’s shared the enigmatic ‘Bone Sugar’. It’s a striking change of pace for the songwriter, but one that doesn’t leave us wanting; trading out chiming acoustics and lilting grooves, ‘Bone Sugar’ is packed top to toe with blown-out guitars, a pumping rhythm section and perhaps Jack’s most electric vocal performance yet. With Ty Segall and T-Rex noted as reference points, the track is a thrilling excursion through glam-rock and fuzzy garage-pop yet still feels grounded by Forever Son’s signature voice - it’s just that this time around Jack’s relying on some especially explosive hooks and a freaky one minute guitar solo to get us moving.

Speaking about the track, Jack shares “‘Bone Sugar’ is about finding that thing that makes you thrive. The things that nourish your soul, spirit, body and mind. Spending so much time at home over the last two years has really left a lot of time to discover what I enjoy, how to relax, how to have fun etc. It has left a lot of time for self reflection. So this song is about taking time to reflect on all of this, and making time to try new things and understand why I do or don't enjoy them.” He continues, “I was spending a bit of time in lockdown wandering around a paddock in my gumboots and blasting T-Rex through some massive headphones at sunset. This song started to come together during one of those walks.”

It’s a real treat that while others were leaning into the quietness of lockdown Forever Son found the need to turn up the heat, and the result is completely joyous; and if that’s the tone of the rest of Welcome To Alchemy Park, we absolutely cannot wait.

Welcome to Alchemy Park is due out on December 3rd through There & Back Again Records.
