Carousel Club - Calling You
Words by Joe Massaro
Thursday 4th November, 2021

Following 2019’s grooving single ‘Sweeter,’ Melbourne guitar-pop outfit Carousel Club are back with their first release in two years. Their new treat ‘Calling You’ is a slice of polished psych-pop that combines swells of introspection with woozy keyboards and jangly guitars, and doubles as the first release from the newly founded Squinked Records.
Not quite a new band on the scene, having formed from a group of friends back in 2017, Carousel Club’s recently signing to Squinked Records marks something of a new beginning for the guitar-pop group. Following their well-received debut EP and a couple singles later, the Melbourne band takes familiar jangle-pop stylings and craft them into contemporary moulds with sun-drenched hooks, synth-washed rhythms and sweet melodies - similar in the vein of Caribou, Spacey Jane, Milky Chance.

Their new single ‘Calling You’ incorporates cooing vocals and sticky beats that float over a dreamy backdrop. There’s an incredible amount of character and life from the carefully layered sounds that surround the new track. With a blissful psychedelic gloss of their jaunty guitar riffs and chirping effects, the new track feels refreshingly modern and nostalgic at the same time - the perfect song to have on repeat coming out of lockdown.

You could say ‘Calling You’ is a rebirth of sorts for the band - a leap towards a more infectiously catchy, full-bodied anthem, but still holding true to their sound. Speaking about the new track in a press release, the band simply wrote “This is the start of something big, stay tuned.”

'Calling You' is out everywhere tomorrow via Squinked Records. Catch Carousel Club performing on November 10th at The Brunswick Ballroom as part of Squinked Unlocked.
