Coolabah Kings - I'm at a Loss
Storming out of the gates of 2022, rising garage trio Coolabah Kings have returned today with their second single ‘I’m at a Loss’, another blast of their self-described “scrap-rock” that refuses to skimp on the energy or punch.
Getting in early with new music this year, Coolabah Kings’ latest single follows hot on the heels of ‘Spineless’, a three and a half minute garage-rock blitz that served as the perfect entry point to the new act (while also managing to score a spot on the excellent Blow Blood Records’ fourth A Long Time Alone Compilation). Picking up where ‘Spineless’ left off, ‘I’m at a Loss’ once again catches the trio doing what they do best - which is serving up restless and dirty garage goodness - all before they’ve even managed to hit the stage for the first time.
After kicking off with a stomping backbeat, ‘I’m at a Loss’ is quick to get to the point as Conor Walsh’s raw vocals cut through over the crunch of a swinging guitar riff. Just moments later, the layers pick up a notch to throw us into a thundering chorus, rich with yelped group vocals and blown out garage guitars.
Cleverly, as ‘I’m at a Loss’ unravels, the band resist the urge to overextend themselves, and instead let Conor’s gritty lyrics anchor the track, as he “examines the myth of the grass always being greener on the other side of relationships.” It’s a compelling combo, with Conor’s unadorned delivery and okka accent making each line feel more scathing than the last while the band charge along behind him, steely-eyed and primitive. And even as the band throw a curve ball at a fiery bridge (which features the winning rhyme of “gin, tonic and lemon” and “double denim”) before ramping up for one last hard-hitting chorus, it’s clear that Coolabah Kings aren’t here to mess around.
