Snowy Band - The Last Thing
Words by James Lynch
Wednesday 2nd February, 2022
Months on from the release of their sophomore album Alternate Endings, Snowy Band have shared a new clip with us today for ‘The Last Thing’, a tranquil yet deceptive accompaniment that pairs compellingly with the track’s elusive atmosphere.
A fair bit has happened since the release of Snowy Band’s Alternate Endings last August. Since then, Snowy has managed to release a whole new album and he and the band have squeezed in a handful of shows, while less interestingly the country has continued to be shaken up by Covid chaos and cancellations. Perhaps more interesting is that Snowy Band’s new clip for ‘The Last Thing’ should’ve been out earlier if it wasn’t for these delays, but instead with its release today, Snowy has fittingly managed to get his final word in five months on.

Built around a lilting fingerpicked guitar alongside a mournful violin line, ‘The Last Thing’ expands in true Snowy fashion - with his whispered vocals and delicate guitar playing at the centre of the track while the band’s gentle flourishes swirl around the edges. For an album that shines thanks to its hypnotically intimate atmosphere, ‘The Last Thing’ might be one of the most tender moments on the record; however, with its slowly unravelling lyrics and interwoven specks of lightness and melancholia that makes up the track’s tapestry, it’s a highlight that reminds us how enchanting Snowy Band can really be.

The new clip, created by Sam Davis and Gabe Micallef, manages to pair the track’s elusive atmosphere with an equally enigmatic visual accompaniment. With its slow moving and scenic shots, we’re initially lulled into a sense of tranquility before the inclusion of a balaclava’ed individual shifts the quaint atmosphere fairly abruptly. Like the track though, it somehow manages to flitter between unsettling and serene without ever suggesting to us which mood should be the natural one.

Speaking about the clip, Sam and Gabe have shared “we tend to be drawn to shooting projects on the most low end equipment we have available to us because nine times out of ten, even if it looks terrible it usually has a certain quality or texture about it that stands out and can’t really be replicated. We tried to create something that complimented the essence of the song rather than something that was specifically narrative driven, although the degree to which that was successful is up for debate. Hopefully people enjoy the clip.”
