No Monster Club - deadbeat effervescent
Ahead of its official release later today (00:00 PST for anyone playing along around the world), we’ve been treated to an early listen of No Monster Club’s whopping eighth album deadbeat effervescent, a collection of vibrant art-pop and charming indie-rock that finds the Irish trio at their most composed yet.
Eccentric and giddy, and smothered in an unrelenting bubblegum-pop sheen, deadbeat effervescent is an unpredictable and all-encompassing listen. As a cult act who’ve spent more than a decade building a loyal fanbase around the world, No Monster Club are remarkably difficult to place - coupling syrupy pop with gritty garage tendencies and tied together with hints of new-wave and reliable indie-rock smarts - and on their first album since 2013 (and perhaps their most meticulously crafted endeavour yet), No Monster Club capture this shapeshifting sound in kaleidoscopic fashion.
From beginning to end, there’s a thrilling sense of controlled chaos to the record. Opening track ‘Waterfight!’ instantly dunks us into their radiant world with a rollicking groove, overflowing with guitar jangles, teetering xylophone lines and frisky pop hooks, before first single ‘Save The Circus’ charges in with exuberant horns and a surprisingly wide-eyed vocal delivery over a disco beat. It’s a gloriously technicoloured way to kick things off that gets straight to the point, and from here on in the album only gets stickier and more mischievous.
From the frenetic stomp of ‘Spaceman’s Gold’ or the addictive tropical feel of ‘MacGyver’, to the zigzags of ‘Ctrl-Alt-Delete’ or the rapturous ‘Case by Case Basis’, it’s incredibly easy to get caught up by the undeniable joyousness and enthusiasm that flows throughout the record, even when No Monster Club are being cheeky or cynical. And as the album rounds out with ‘Walk The Plank’, a moment that wrangles all of deadbeat effervescent’s charisma into a last swirl of warped pop, we’re left feeling compelled to begin again, to dig back in and rediscover all the ear-candy we may have missed the first time around.
