Greg Steps - The New Saturday Night
Words by James Lynch
Monday 14th February, 2022
Ahead of its official release tomorrow, we’ve been gifted an early listen to local songwriter Greg Steps’ latest dose of tender indie-folk - loaded with delicate charisma and his evocative storytelling, ‘The New Saturday Night’ is an enthralling second taste of Greg’s forthcoming debut album.
The second teaser from Greg’s forthcoming debut album Out in the Boonies, ‘The New Saturday Night’ follows on from his 2021 single ‘Town Without A Face’. However, where ‘Town Without A Face’ was frisky and loaded with ragged charm, ‘The New Saturday Night’ trades out the former track’s sunny hooks for something a little more tender and wide-eyed.

Written in response to a nearby house party one Saturday night while he and his partner were trying to put their baby daughter to bed, ‘The New Saturday Night’ expands around soft piano chimes and a reliable acoustic guitar lilt, the hushed atmosphere seemingly mimicking the tone of Greg’s evening as opposed to his neighbours. While Greg shares that the track is “unashamedly a love song”, with a yearning violin sewing the instrumentation together while Greg’s rambling vocals unravel, there’s a compelling mixture of moods to the track; simultaneously sounding wistful and pensive, yet quietly content.

Speaking about the occasion that inspired the track, Greg told us “as frustrating as it was to not be able to get our little girl to go to sleep, in that moment we could only laugh. We could hear the sound of drunken karaoke coming through the wall that we shared with our twenty-something year old neighbours, and it dawned on us how much our lives had changed. It was like, ‘hey wait a minute, that used to be us! What the hell happened?!’ With that in mind, we also quietly shared a sense of relief at not having to be on the other side of that wall. We were actually a little taken aback by how unappealing the idea of a raucous party seemed, compared with staying in and looking after a tired, cranky baby. It must be love!”

'The New Saturday Night' is out in all the usual places tomorrow.
