Partner Look - Leroy
Words by James Lynch
Wednesday 16th March, 2022
Following the release of their excellent debut album By The Book earlier this year, sisters-couples-and-friends supergroup Partner Look have treated us to a brand new clip for ‘Leroy’, a joyous expansion on the story behind this dose of delightful indie-pop.
‘Leroy’ showcases everything Partner Look do best on By The Book. Built around a buoyant groove with an awkward bent that keeps listeners on their toes, ‘Leroy’ glistens with guitar flourishes and chiming keys while Ambrin Hasnain’s lyrics come loaded with charisma - so much so that whether we read them as literal or poignant, they’re similarly evocative. There’s a giddy rush that comes as we reached the track’s joyous outro, Partner Look serving up a triumphant payoff to the past three minutes of music as they allow each of their reliable hooks to fully nestle into our brain and set up camp.

The new clip, created by friend of the band Emma Collard, is equally direct yet just as expansive. Based around footage of the real life dog Leroy doing his thing in the Northern Territory, there’s something both satisfying and slightly hypnotic as we watch the sunburnt colours blend with the balmy instrumentation.

To explain, Ambrin shares “the song is about my friend’s dog Leroy. In January 2020, I accompanied my friend Emma and her dog Leroy on a drive to Papunya, a town on Luritja country in the Northern Territory, where Emma was working. We camped on our way up, and one night we set up camp at a salt lake. Leroy must have cut his paws on the sharp rocks surrounding the lake, as we noticed he was limping. In Alice Springs, Emma took him to the vet and he got his paws bandaged. Back in Papunya, Emma went back to work and I stayed at her house during the week, with no phone or internet reception. Because of his sore paws, and because he was prone to jumping the fence and visiting Emma at work, I spent a week sitting on the couch with Leroy and thought a lot about him and his life. An anxious dog, Leroy has had his troubles, but has found a beautiful connection with Emma, who would do anything for him. When I sent Emma the song, she made this film clip showing Leroy in his element, running across beautiful Luritja country.”

By The Book is out now through Trouble In Mind Records, Spunk Records and Osborne Again - head to partnerlook.bandcamp.com to purchase the album on limited vinyl.
