Velvet Bloom - Glimmer
Words by James Lynch
Friday 18th March, 2022
Following the release of ‘Glimmer’ earlier this month, neo-soul powerhouse Velvet Bloom have returned with a brand new clip that celebrates the band's community, while capturing all of the track’s composure and grace in its stunning visuals.
Earlier this month, Velvet Bloom announced their long-awaited debut EP alongside the release of the stunning title track. Trouble Juice has been lucky to have been treated to a bit from Velvet Bloom in the past, but ‘Glimmer’ might be their most radiant release so far - loaded with their signature soulful grooves, intoxicating instrumentation and frontwoman Maddy Herbert’s velvety voice.

Composed and captivating from beginning to end, ‘Glimmer’ shines in its ability to keep listeners on their toes without becoming overwhelming. While it’s obvious the band have the chops to run rings around us, they opt to masterfully weave the instrumentation through each twist and turn to highlight the emotional potency of Maddy’s glowing vocal performance. Understated and smokey in moments, the next dynamic and flowing, it’s a bold assertion of the group’s alluring power as they prepare to reveal their first full-length release.

Today the band have shared the brand new clip for the track, created by Maddy, bassist Anthony Rennick and video artist Rhys Newling. The visual accompaniment shares a similar softness with the single, with its slow moving shots and calming pastel colours, and as we view each band member performing to us through mirrors the yearning atmosphere of the track is all the more evocative.

Speaking about the clip, Maddy explains “we wanted to create something super special for this music video and I had a very specific vision in terms of aesthetics. After speaking to Rennick about the intention of the song and what it meant to me lyrically, the idea for the video came together quite quickly. We wanted to use mirrors to communicate how the people who we have the deepest admiration for are woven into the making of us as individuals. This was also the reason behind the family-portrait style videos of people who have played a huge role in supporting our journey! I love my community and feel extremely blessed to be surrounded by such incredible people. ‘Glimmer’ is an ode to my people.”

Glimmer EP is out on Friday April 8th through Cousin Will Records - head to velvetbloom.bandcamp.com to pre-order the EP on limited vinyl. Velvet Bloom are heading on tour to celebrate the release across April, May and June, follow them below to find out where you can catch them.
