Fenn Wilson - Howl
Back with new music this week, Melbourne singer-songwriter Fenn Wilson has shared a sneak peak at his latest single ‘Howl’ with us today, a new dose of his evocative and all-encompassing electric folk.
Picking up where his previous single ‘Laying With The Bones’ left off, Fenn Wilson has returned today a next taste of where his idiosyncratic brand of shapeshifting alternative-folk is headed next. However, where ‘Laying With The Bones’ turned up the heat with its fiery guitar-work and a swaggering bluesy stomp, ‘Howl’ is perhaps a little more composed, opting to place Fenn’s pensive and potent songwriting smarts front and centre.
Led by a rugged guitar line that circles unasummingly to introduce the track, ‘Howl’ truly opens with Fenn’s all-consuming voice, his deep brooding croon loading the soundscape with emotion as the track begins to take shape. At first, ‘Howl’ unfolds like the opening rays of light that start the day - with its sedated guitar and subtle gleams of organ - but soon enough Fenn’s band emerge to strike up a rollicking groove, embedding the track with a powerful ebb and flow that tangles perfectly with Fenn’s lilting vocals.
Given the song is “about desire and hearing the call of that desire, articulating the struggle between giving in and fighting against it for fear of what might come of it”, it’s fitting that ‘Howl’ has a constant sense of forward-momentum whilst also feeling like a fleeting moment. Suitably so, the new clip created by Willem Kingma and Kelli Blackmore, combines slowed-down, sped-up and unaffected footage of Fenn, making the video play like a whirlwind that brims with passionate intensity yet just as much colour and charm.
