Free Time - That’s Rare
Words by James Lynch
Tuesday 19th July, 2022
Alongside the announcement of their long-awaited third album Jangle Jargon, today we’ve got the pleasure of sharing a first listen to ‘That’s Rare’, a spirited and frenetic return-to-form from loved Melbourne-via-NYC group Free Time.
A good six years on from the release of their latest album In Search Of Free Time, Free Time are miraculously back today with ‘That’s Rare’, the first cut pulled from a forthcoming new album that almost seems a little too good to be true. Recorded from 2017 through to 2021, with sessions across New York City to Melbourne and back again all with their fair share of hurdles, Jangle Jargon marks a triumphant return from songwriter Dion Nania and his cult jangle-pop band.

Led by a charging chord progression, ‘That’s Rare’ explodes into a tangle of chiming guitars while Dion’s charismatic drawl sits above the sprawl effortlessly. In lieu of a chorus, the band dart into a searing lead break, the groove growing more relentless as the energy amounts. While still buoyed by the carefree jangle that’s defined much of Free Time’s sound, ‘That’s Rare’ feels equally wired and restless to get moving again - a fitting atmosphere given their return has seemingly taking six years in the making.

Speaking about the song, Dion shares “it’s not exactly a break up song. It’s more about the months leading up to the end of a long relationship, where the dead man walking is blissfully unaware that he is a dead man walking. But of course there is some bitterness in looking back on such a period.”

Jangle Jargon is out on Friday September 30th via Bedroom Suck Records.
