Offering up a second taste of their forthcoming debut album, Perth-based psych-pop act Mars on Holiday expand on their dream-like psychedelic sound with the entrancing ‘Her and I’.
Following the release of their debut single ‘Dreaming all Day’, today Mars on Holiday have shared a second glimpse into their gleaming sonic world with the release of ‘Her and I’. Whereas ‘Dreaming All Day’ pursued more of a brooding dream-pop sound, the brisk instrumentals and pulsating melodies of ‘Her and I’ showcases a new edge to the band’s tone as this track experiments with a heavier psychedelic sound that takes inspiration from guitar-driven 70’s rock.

Right off the bat, ‘Her and I’ launches into fast-paced, punchy guitar riffs and slappy drum beats that mix in with Dane’s drawn out, echoed vocals, evoking an unbalanced dreamlike atmosphere that’s disorientingly complimentary. The intro then bleeds into a bridge of faint vocalisations that float in the air above the waves of swathing synths. As each section of the track expands out of the last, we are navigated through a psychedelic tunnel towards a destination culminating in a reverb-drenched outro of electronic etherealness.

With its introspective lyricism, such as “me and my lover are hiding away, dreaming all day”, paired with the constantly shifting structure of the track, there’s an illusive sensation of push and pull within ‘Her and I’, that makes the song feel both forward-moving yet stuck in the moment. Speaking about the track, the band explain ‘Her and I’ “chronicles life in the Covid era: feeling like the path of your life is completely and irreversibly changing, trying to fight it but inevitably having to let go and give in.”

'Her and I' is out everywhere today.
