Back with her first new music since 2020, Isobel Caldwell has today shared ‘Tiger Stripes’, an intimate cut of serene indie-folk with an evocative clip that beams with friendship and gratitude.
Hushed and meditative, ‘Tiger Stripes’ unfolds like the opening rays of sunlight that start the day, first with an atmospheric swell before a twinkling finger-picked guitar emerges to set the track into a mild and calming lilt. With a minimalist backbone that ebbs steadily behind, Isobel’s stunning vocals take centerstage, her delicate delivery building momentum while ‘Tiger Stripes’ unravels, to eventually turn into a mantra that weights the track with emotional potency as it rambles to a close.

With a clip created by Isobel with help from collaborators Winni and Pru, the visual accompaniment poignantly highlights the joyousness and turbulence that ‘Tiger Stripes’ simultaneously encompasses. It’s a powerful clip; as the plethora of stripes found in nature are juxtaposed against creases and scars on human bodies, the clip slowly becomes more and more stirring, until finally playing as a celebration of friendship as we get to truly see the personalities that come wrapped up in each of the wrinkles previously shown.

Speaking about the track, Isobel shares “this song was written as a tool to get out of a tough depressive episode. Pretty much I was really struggling to see the value in myself generally and could physically see the exhaustion and apathy forming in the lines on my face and body. I realised I deserved a break, and made a concerted effort to talk to myself more kindly. People often say "how would you talk to yourself if you were your own best friend?", and I tried to really harness that in this song. Every impression on our skin, whether it's a wrinkle, a scar, stretchmark, cellulite, etc etc etc carries with it a story and is a beautiful part of what makes up our bodies, and that always brings me a lot of comfort to think about, and helped me look more kindly at myself, too.”

'Tiger Stripes' is out everywhere today, ahead of the release of Isobel's forthcoming debut album Duty of Care.
